Characterization Of George Eliot In Novels

Characterization Of George Eliot In Novels

Characterization Of George Eliot In Novels is unforgettable for reader due to its realism and tragic effect. When we discuss and analyse most of the novels of George Eliot in detail, we come to know the fact that it is her power of depicting a character which makes any character life-like and real. For example, when we have a deep analysis, of her famous tragic novel “A Mill on the Floss” in which we come across Mary Evans in the character of Maggie, same like matter is here; when we read or discuss this novel, we also meet a very towering and overwhelming personality that is the father of Maggie in “A Mill on the Floss” named as Robert Evans.

Being the central character of the novel, we observe that all the minor and major other characters are linked with him. There is no exaggeration in saying this that the story of the novel has been written from his point of view and character. As far as the matter of fact is concerned, he is the close-pen portrait of the novelist’s own father; Robert Evans; because there had been observed the many resemblances between these two characters.

He is being a carpenter by profession, leads a very simple and humble life with his parents and a brother Seth Bede. Adam Bede is a man of supreme & dignified qualities and has a very unique and towering personality. He is always sincere, honest and good humoured, not only to himself but to others in his treatment and conduct. His honesty and integrity are always free from any doubt and suspicion. Because of these qualities, he is always the target of Mr. Bury who, being his proprietor, wants to see him as his son-in-law.

As he is an integral person and his egoism does not permit him to be a toy in the hands of his relative in laws. It is his self-respect which promptly rejects the heavy offer in spite of the temptation of being the business partner of Mr. Bury. Mr. Bury who without any condition, promptly makes him his partner after judging and analysing his strong character and dedicated personality. It is one of the traits of his character that he always takes his profession as a hobby. The reason being, he is a dutiful man who always feels a huge pleasure and satisfaction in his work.

He is God fearing person and honest and knows well that God’s all-seeing eye sees. He is a man of splendid moral courage and always thinks that whatever he does, should be well-done and should all be done in time. On the basis of these qualities, Arthur makes him the manager of the woods and Poysers feel that Hetty cannot do better than marrying Adam. Even they start feeling honoured and respected when he courts her and is engaged or betrothed to her.

His outlook is very broad and he is of the view that every person should seek God according to his own philosophy. When Seth is mocked at the time of being Methodist, he minds it and forbids the workers because he always considers the work as a part of his religion and he worships his duty. He is always a fair dealer with others and with their concerns and works and expects others to be fair too.

If he has a weak point in his character and that is only his love for Hetty. It is his passionate love which makes him blind to Hetty’s true nature.

That’s why he overlooks her weaknesses and faults in her love. Hetty is being loved by two persons at the same time; one is poor. Adam and the other are rich — expected to be Squire Arthur. She rejects the poor Adam and prefers the other. Even then she is ready to marry Adam after a quarrel between the two lovers. Adam forgets all this and is happy but when he comes to know about the illegitimate pregnancy of Hetty from Irwine that it was the result or fruit of her unfair relations with Arthur who was a rival of him; though, here he got upset but on the basis of humanity, even then Adam stood by Hetty in her trial and bore great pains. During the trial, Adam and Dinah got closed and this closing relation turned into love.

Here we see that though his love for Hetty is wholehearted one yet he transfers his love to Dinah and this very love gives him a new strength.

As far as the other side of his character is concerned, it is about his sense of righteousness and vanity that he has clarity of vision and can easily judge and see everything vividly and dearly while others cannot see it, is actually a basic flaw in his character, but we see that the course of the novel shows the gradual purgation of his flaw in the character.

He gets this purgation after facing the number of sufferings. It is his self-righteousness which is responsible for his bad relations to his father, mother, Arthur and even to Hetty. But we see the gesture of reconciliation between Adam and Arthur as proof that new Adam has recovered his fault.

After getting married to Dinah, he becomes or seems to be a more polished man than before. Gradually, he shuns off his pride in his own righteousness and attains a more apt and genuine but complex understanding of life. Step by step, he attains the virtue of humanity and finally becomes conscious of his own short-comings and in this way he becomes able to differentiate between the positive and negative side of life. Here we also observe that the novelist presents him in a process of education which can be clearly seen in his relations to the guilt of Hetty.

Though a change comes slowly in the strange character of Adam yet it does come. It is the influence of Adam‘s love and marriage with Dinah that he becomes absolutely a complete man and a fully integrated personality. There is no doubt that the power of love reforms all his faults and he becomes a new man after his marriage.

Some critics are of the view that there is a balance between Adam’s head and heart and some other coming critics express their opinion in the words that he is too good to be true. It is said that he is a perfect human being but the truth is different one.

To conclude this topic, we can say clearly and absolutely that in the beginning, he is not a perfect man but gradually he is totally changed through a process of love and suffering. It is the power of love which leads him to the fulfillment of his personality and the process of his growth and maturity is completed which makes his head and heart fully integrated.

Character Of Adam Bede In The Novel “Adam Bede”

Character Of Adam Bede In Novel

Gradual maturity of Character Of Adam Bede in the novel of “Adam Bede” is remarkable in story. When we discuss and analyse most of the novels of George Eliot in detail, we come to know the fact that it is her power of characterization which makes any character life-like and real. How Does Egdon Heath Act As A Character In Novel

How Does Egdon Heath Act As A Character In Novel

How Does Egdon Heath Act As A Character In Novel “Return Of The Native”. As a deep and extensive analysis of any novel of Hardy shows that in Hardy‘s novels, much significance or importance is also given to a place only. Same is the case of the novel “The Return of the Native” and it is rightly said to be dubbed as the book of Egdon Heath. This is such a place in the novel which directly or indirectly influences the life of the various characters in the novels. This also moves them to love or hate, to despair or to the philosophic mind. In fact, this place of Egdon Heath lies in the philosophic imagination of Hardy: it is

“perfectly accordant with man’s nature – neither hateful, nor ugly, neither commonplace, nor tame; but, like man slighted and enduring.”

As it is observed in most of the novels of Hardy that a place is personified of “Nature” the same thing we observe in this novel in which Egdon is the personification of nature and Hardy is habitual of producing such symbolic characters. Hardy himself was the product of Egdon Heath and lived on the fringes of Egdon Heath. That’s why he was perfectly familiar with the surroundings and the environments of Heath.

This very place not only provides the background to the novel but it also acts an important character in the novel which not only shapes the destiny of the other characters but also directs their lives. Around about half of the novel has been written according to the changing moods and colours of the nature of the Heath and to the reactions of the main characters. towards it. The darkness of natural surroundings has always been playing its role in the lives of Hardy‘s characters. It is also observed in this novel that the dark atmosphere of Heath had also influenced the lives and destinies of those who dwell permanently and contentedly amid its wilderness.

Egdon Heath is not only a place in this novel but also gives or presents the reflection of Hardy’s own life. It always affects the lives of those severely who are not adjusted or settled in its natural surroundings or atmosphere. Those who are sick of its rough environment say that they can not utilize their potential and talent here. As it is known and said that Egdon Heath also reflects the glimpses of Hardy’s own life at a large scale and actually Egdon Heath symbolises the whole universal order in which man is but an insignificant and fickle particle. This Egdon Heath also serves as the personification of Nature and it even feels the sufferings of its dwellers and contributes to their happiness and unhappiness.

It is very right to say that the interpretation of the novel is incomplete without describing Heath as it holds the action of the novel. Its main role is to stress the real circumstances in which man lives because Egdon Heath presents an extended image of the nature of which man is a part; in which he is succumbed to or caught and ultimately which cares nothing for him. Analytically speaking, it can be stated that man’s life in relation to it, is as short-lived as the bonfires which the peasants make of the furze that grows on the Heath. According to Hardy‘s point of view, Heath presents man both historically and geologically.

It is also a source of livelihood of the inhabitants of its surroundings who are its furze-cutters. As it is said that Heath plays an important role in the action of the novel and influences the principal characters of this story. This very thing or fact is very evident from the lives of Clym and Eustacia. Eustacia hates it a lot while Clym loves it a lot and this very great difference of opinions of both plays a vital role in their lives and a gulf between them is erupted which gradually starts increasing with the incidents and experiences and results in their separation.

Clym who was born in Egdon Heath and being the product of it, is absolutely familiarized with its surroundings but on the contrary to it; Eustasia is being outsider, has not been born and bred there and its environment always pinched and tortured her forever. Clym, on the other hand, is very much attracted and fascinated by the same environment and he always considers it as a paradise to live. That’s why, he leaves the fashionable and colourful life of Paris and returns to his native place of Egdon Heath. Eustacia who is discontented to the life of Heath and always dreams of living in the life of Paris and about Heath she has always worthless and cheap views which she utters as:

“Tis my cross, my shame, and will be my death.”

Her words prove to be prophetic and death indeed kills her. In comparison of Clym with reddleman who is also its spirit while Clym is the child of Egdon and always feels himself as a part of Heath and wants to serve it as much as possible because he has a great respect and love for his mother homeland. The reddleman knows every nook and corner of the Heath and remains hand-in-glove with Heath. Though he is also in close relation with Heath as Clym is yet we see that Heath plays no tricks or ironies on him. In the case of some major characters, Heath plays as a part of an enemy. It plays a huge and great damage to Mrs. Yeobright and at last kills her at its bosom.

In addition to this, it also influences the plot construction of the novel as most of the major and crucial. events occur on Heath. The game of dice, the incident of quarrel between Eustacia and Mrs. Yeobright, the event of a lighting bonfire occurs on Egdon Heath. At last, the rain-swept and storm-beaten Heath kills both Eustacia and Mrs. Yeogbright.

To sum up this above mentioned discussion, it can be said straightforwardly and forcefully that Egdon Heath not only provides the plot of the novel but also, it provides foreground to it. It is by virtue of it that the story is given a dramatic twist and touch because it has successfully and skillfully been incorporated or woven into the formation of the story. Heath is actually a joint point where all the characters meet, plan and quarrel. So, we see that all the activities and roles of all the activities and roles of all the characters begin, grow to the climax, to the anticlimax and then decline to their finalization.

Character Sketch of Clym Yeobright In “Return Of The Native”

Character Sketch of Clym Yeobright In

Character Sketch of Clym Yeobright In “Return Of The Native” is on of the central character of the story. Whenever a reader of any literature, studies any literary composition as fiction, drama, novel, etc. He comes to know the theme, subject matter as well as the central figure to whom the whole story or action of the plot revolves round that is called later as a hero or heroine of that particular literary composition.

As far as the matter of “The Return of the Native” is concerned, here Clym Yeobright is the central figure or character who is the real life and soul of the novel. It seems that the story of the novel has been written from his point of view because all the major and minor characters are directly and indirectly linked with him.Actually, he is the “native” and whose “return” to Egdon Heath leads the destinies of the others to their finalization.

He has his unique and most striking qualities in his personality which are his intense desire to serve his fellows, his deep love for his mother, her strong love for Egdon Heath, his pure and genuine passion of love for Eustasia, his outstanding capacity for endurance of misfortune. Clym is a man of worldly knowledge and experiences as he lived and traveled in the most advanced cities of the world. He is a man of deep observations and meditations.

He is of the view that “thought is a disease of flesh.” His philosophy of life is very apt as he says that beauty and philosophy do not go together. Same is the case with this handsome guy. During his stay in Paris, he even does not forget his native people in a single moment as he has always had a great love and devotion for his native town. He is not attracted by the artificial and pompous life of a metropolitan city of Paris rather he feels himself bored there but he feels joyful and happy in his birth place. He wants to lead his remaining life in Egdon Heath because he loves this place by the cores of his heart and considers this place as a paradise to live.

He even gets angry with his wife Eustasia when she speaks some ill words against Heath. It is his. In materialistic nature, he is not impressed by the materialistic and worldly trends of the people of Paris whose only aim is to gather the riches and wealth of the world. That’s why, he says goodbye to this life of worldly pursuits and returns to his native life which is much closer to spirituality and nature.

He makes the decision to come back to Heath so that he can open a school there in order to educate or serve the people there. Though he is not supported or encouraged by his mother in his plan yet he is determined in his purpose of educating the people of his native place.

As he is a man of knowledge and is highly qualified as compared to the other school masters in the area. Being sincere, faithful and selfless, he strictly adheres to his intention of serving the poor and ignorant subjects of this background area. In fact, he wants to impart and convey the true information and knowledge of the artificial life of Paris or big cities. Through his stay in Paris, he wants to tell the importance of simple, spiritual and natural life of the native towns. As we know that Clym is dead, determined in his purpose and decision and he does not give up his intention even when Eustasia urges him not to do so and go back to Paris.

Only it is his semi-blindness y or weak eyesight which compels him to close his educational project otherwise he would have carried for his whole remaining life. However, his zeal for such great human purpose is really praiseworthy.

Wildeve has rightly said about him;

“He is an enthusiastic about ideas, and careless about outward things.”

As he is a man of loving nature so he loves every body by the cores of his heart. It is very obvious that he is attracted by the beauty and charms of Eustasia and falls in love with Eustasia. Though his mother does not approve of his choice of Eustasia as his life partner and awares him that she is not suitable wife for him yet we see that he adheres to his decision. Eustasia has already informed him of her past love – affair with Wildeve so his mother’s arrow remains fruitless. He leaves his mother’s home and settles in a small cottage. According to his mother, he is obstinate and pig-headed.

Apart from these minor flaws in his character, he is also somewhat a man of romantic touch. After being allured and attracted by the charms & physical beauty of Eustasia, he says to her,

“Let me look right into your moon lit face and dwell on every line and curve in it.”

There is no doubt that his passion of love for Eustasia is genuine, pure, deep and enthusiastic but his passion is hurt or defeated when his project of educating the people is not only supported or encouraged but badly hated by Eustasia and his mother. Eustasia hates such kinds of projects and does not like that her husband should live in this backward atmosphere.

Eustasia, being an outsider, does not like living permanently in Heath but also wants her husband to leave Heath. On the basis of these differences of opinions, their marriage soon gets spoiled and ultimately they are separated from one another. Clym proves to be a thoughtful, reflective, contented and intellectual type of man while Eustasia is absolutely artificial, materialistic, discontented, weak-minded. and passionate. Clym is absolutely contented with the atmosphere of rural life while Eustasia is dissatisfied with it and always dreams of living and enjoying the pleasures of the life of Paris.

As Clym’s eyesight gets weak and he accepts his semi-blindness as a decree of fate and adopts a humble occupation of Furze-cutting to earn his livelihood. Eustasia does not like this occupation of her husband and feels more humiliated and degraded.

Fate also plays its role in the form of accidents and co-incidents in separating Clym and Eustasia. Eustasia is not only different from her husband temperamentally but also from her mother-in-law. It is his hard luck that he loses both his mother and dear wife. He tries his best to save them both but fate is dominant in both cases. He loves his mother devotedly and the sorrow & anguish which he expresses on finding her dead body, are beyond in describing in words. It is her death which breaks his heart and he holds himself responsible for the deaths of his wife and mother.

How fate plays its role so hard on him that he wanted to go to his mother’s house for reconciliation but unfortunately, she died on the same day. Clym is a man of keeping heart of an affectionable and considerate level and wants to do something of welfare and betterment for Thomasin. When she becomes a widow and he loses Eustasia, he even decides to propose to her just for her sake otherwise he is least interested in getting married again.

At the end of the novel, we see that due to his semi blindness, Clym becomes a preacher. As he has a great interest in educating his people with ethics and morals so, he, being a lecturer on moral subjects, shows a broader and liberal attitude and becomes a secularist in his creeds.

To conclude this topic, it can be said vehemently and forcefully that character of Clym Yeobright dominates on all the other characters. As a whole, character of Clym Yeobright plays multidimensional roles in this novel. All the major and minor characters are directly and indirectly connected with him. He was a careerist in Paris. In the whole course of the novel, he either plays.role of an educationist or Furze-cutting or as a responsible husband or as a preacher.

Is Thomas Hardy A Pessimist In “Return Of The Native”?

Is Thomas Hardy A Pessimist In

Is Thomas Hardy A Pessimist? An extensive study of most of the novels shows Hardy‘s outlook as a pessimistic one. As some critics are of the view that Hardy always presents the darker side of life, and his most of the characters are victims of the cruel clutches of hostile nature. That’s why, different critics dub it differently. As far as the appeal of this novel “The Return of the Native” is concerned, is presented in the words of pessimism and fatalism. Hardy’s novels present his philosophy of life at a very large scale.

Being pessimist, he always believes that man is born to suffer and he is fatalistic because he believes that destiny is always hostile to man and that it governs over human life. He is of the firm views that a man is not free or not the master of his fate in this universe. It is very evident from the characters and their ending of the lives of Tess, Clym and Eustasia who could not live and move independently and freely.

In our religion Islam and some other major religions of the universe, it is believed that man is born with a will or an authority of doing good or bad. But we see in Hardy‘s novels that man becomes the puppet in the cruel clutches of fate and circumstances which always go against him because man is miserable and helpless against the powers of nature. It does not mean that he is however a cynic because he is also of the view that this good and noble being is always fighting against the cruel circumstances and forces of the universe.

Hardy never ever thought and considered

“life to be a boon rather he believes that happiness is an occasional episode in a general drama of life.”

Hardy‘s vision of life is that life is basically tragic and the chance of escape is very rare or remote. These are accidents or coincidences which always aggravate man’s tragedy because nature is not friendly to man forever rather it is a foe to him and is always on the verge of a negative role of destroying him forever. “In the Return of the Native,” we always see that tragedy happens due to the weaknesses and faults of the characters themselves. In addition to it, hostile circumstances and forces of nature also play a very integral role in shaping them into very miserable conditions.

As far as the case of Clym is considered, it is entirely different because of his soft nature, he likes to serve his fellow human beings by providing education to them. He had not been a materialistic and worldly type of man because he left the fashionable life of Paris and returned to his native place Egdon Heath in order to lead a calm, soothing and natural life. Apart from these good qualities, Clym has also his own shortcomings which are responsible for his unhappiness. It is his inability when he fails to perceive Eustacia‘s unsuitability as a wife as she is a girl of naturalism and worldly pleasures and ornaments. There is a huge gulf between the nature and temperament of both.

His mother is very right in calling her as “an idle, voluptuous · woman”. He fell in love with her & married her but he had failed to keep her happy and satisfied. The reason being, she is of different nature and wants to lead a fashionable city life of a big city. Clym, being a fellow of simple, sober and noble nature fails to keep a balance between his mother and his wife. It is really his major fault that firstly he is inclined to his wife wholeheartedly and later he becomes inclined towards his mother. This shows that he is a man of uncertain and unbalance nature who is unable to maintain balance between his duties to wife and mother. In short, it can be stated that Clym is indeed as unsuitable for Eustasia as she is for him.

As far as the case of Eustasia‘s personality is concerned, her own temperament is largely responsible for her tragedy. She always dream of living in the advanced fashionable life in Paris and was firstly impressed by the personality of Clym only by watching his personality who recently came back from the artificial life of Paris. So she chooses Clym for her life partner by thinking and expecting that he would fulfill her desires. First, she claims to live even in hermitage with Clym but being unable to subdue her longing feels miserable on Egdon Heath, a place which is a paradise for Clym to live. She cannot accept Clym’s humble occupation as a furze cutter and she is always inconsistent and fickle-minded. Her weak and unstable nature is revealed to us when she even becomes unfaithful to Clym only by being tempted by Wildeve.

She never ever thought of serving her mother-in-law which is her moral duty. Her mother-in-law is a respectable mother but she proves to be a rigid and obstinate type of lady and creates problems for her daughter-in-law and her son. She is also responsible for the tragedy. The even does not take part in the welfare works of Clym. Clym opens a school in Egdon Heath in order to educate the people of the area.

Instead of supporting and helping in his humanitarian projects, she starts opposing these educational plans of Clym and in this way she produces a gulf between him and herself. Most of the time, she finds faults and taunts Eustasia who is the beloved wife of Clym. She does not have the least kindness and love of human nature towards Eustasia.

As far as the personality of Wildeve is concerned, he proves to be a villain is certainly a character of creating many problems which the various characters face. He is a man of sexual lust and keeps on changing loyalties. Owing to the influence of his evil nature and sexual lust, he cannot maintain the balance between the relations of two women. That’s why he marries one of them but keeps on having relations with the other. He makes the matters complicated when he tries to revive his relations with Eustasia who does not marry him at first.

In addition to the characters, the situations are also responsible for the tragedy in “The Return of the Native.” We also observe that it is the difference of opinions between the two major characters of Clym & Eustasia which causes the tragedy. It is the place of Egdon Heath where their true nature and temperaments are revealed to us. Clym loves Egdon Heath by the cores of his heart and considers it as a paradise to live but Eustasia hates this very place the most. This very situation caused of tragedy a lot.

There is also another incongruity between Clym and his mother which also aggravates the tragedy. Though both of them love one another very much yet their purposes and views of life are different from one another. It is the death of Clym’s mother which serves as a stamp of antagonism between them and the role which was played by Wildeve, made the tragedy much grimmer and heavy.

Now we come towards the very integral and important role of destiny which is always very evident in shaping and reshaping Hardy‘s character in the novel. In this novel, we see that the role of destiny makes the tragedy heavier. How the hostility of destiny plays its role in the life of a loving couple who suffers dis adjustment on the account of their different attitudes of life.

Apart from this, there are also many accidents and co-incidents which make the tragedy possible. How it is coincident that Clym’s mother happens to come to her son for reconciliation when Wildeve is already there and is talking with Eustasia. Clym who is sleeping in the room and it is also by chance that Eustasia does not attend the knocking of door of Mrs. Yeobright just on thinking that Clym‘ is present in the room and would open the door but unfortunately he is sleeping and Mrs. Yeobright could not be attended by them. She goes back in a furious and angry mood, is bitten by an adder and dies but before doing she tells everything to Johnny.

How chance plays its role here instead of meeting both, Johnny meets Clym. by chance and tells him all whatever Mrs. Yeobright has said to him. Clym starts quarreling with Eustasia and drives her out. It is once again ill-fate of Clym that he writes a letter to her to come back but the letter is not reached or received by her and miscarried. Clym, who is unaware of this, starts waiting for her knock by sitting alone. As he hears the footsteps, he suddenly and eagerly opens the door and finds Thomiosin there who informs him of Eustasia‘s flight with Wildeve and this very flight serves as the end with their death.

To conclude this above mentioned discussion, it can be said forcefully that all Eustasia‘s meetings with Wildeve after her marriage have been accidental and these are all accidents which add to the events of the tragedy of the novel. In Hardy‘s novels in which nature always plays a role of living agent in the lives of human beings, here, in this novel, it is Egdon Heath. On the night of her elopement, Heath is swept by rain and storm , and it kills both Eustasia and her mother-in-law and her lover Wildeve.
